Frequently Asked Questions
- What types of leagues are
available?
We offer
two seasons per year (SPRING/SUMMER and FALL/WINTER)
for the following adult softball and volleyball leagues: Men's
Weeknight Slo-Pitch, Men's Sunday Slo-Pitch, Men's 3-Pitch, Men's
Fast Pitch, Women's 3-Pitch, Coed 3-Pitch, Coed Volleyball, Men's/Women's
Volleyball and Women's Basketball.
- What is 3-Pitch?
Three-Pitch is a form of softball originated
locally which has become extremely popular for San Diego Park and
Recreation Department leagues. The rules are basically the same as slo-pitch
except there is no defensive pitcher. The offense provides a
pitcher and each batter receives a maximum of 3 pitches, including
foul balls. Therefore, the batter will either get a hit or be
called out. The defense still can field ten players. This game has
become a favorite of adult leagues due to the speed of the game in
eliminating called balls and strikes. In most cases, players are
able to have at least 3 or 4 at bats per game. A complete list of
all 3-Pitch and Slo-Pitch rules will be given to all managers at
the Manager's Meetings.
- How can I get my team into a league?
Information on team
registration can be obtained by accessing the League Information
Form for each type of league.
- I don't have a team, so how can I join as an
individual? We do not place or register
individuals, however, there are often many teams looking for
individual players. Go to the Sports Forum to post your request as
an individual looking for a team or team looking for
players.
- When, where and what times are the leagues
held? League nights, days and
fields may change from season to season, however all softball
games are held at various Park and Recreation facilities within
the city of San Diego only. All fields are within a 12 mile radius
and we do not use any facilities in the San Diego County
areas. Volleyball leagues are always held at the Balboa Park
Activity Center in the Balboa Park section of San Diego. Women’s basketball
is held at the Municipal Gym in Balboa Park. All softball and
volleyball leagues, with the exception of Men's Sunday Slo-Pitch,
are held in the evenings during the week. Game and match times
for the various leagues are listed in the League Information form.
- Can I request a particular night and field for the
league my team enters? Some leagues will already have the night and
fields predetermined and listed in the League Information forms.
Other leagues, such as Coed 3-Pitch and Weeknight Slo-Pitch are
larger leagues with more than one division. For these leagues, we
classify new teams prior to the start of the league in order to
determine their skill level. Once classification games are
completed, teams are placed in a division with other teams of
similar skill levels. Then a night and field is assigned to each
division. New teams are notified of their division, night and
field prior to the Manager's Meeting. Teams cannot request a
particular night or field since the format for these leagues is to
place teams in competitive divisions.
- What if our team cannot participate on the night
assigned? Once your team has been
notified of your division, night and field and you determine that
you cannot participate due to the night or field, we will first
attempt to place you in a different division which will still
accommodate your skill level. If all else fails, you may drop from
the league PRIOR to the Manager's Meeting
and receive a FULL REFUND of fees. If a team drops
from the league AFTER the Manager's Meeting,
they will forfeit all fees paid.
- Can we add players to our team roster once the
league has started? Yes, teams may add players
to their roster after the season has started provided they do not
exceed the maximum number of players. In most cases, softball
teams may carry a maximum of 20 players on their roster and
volleyball a maximum of 12. Once teams have played ½ their season
games, they will not longer be eligible to add players. This
policy will normally give teams 5 to 6 weeks into the season
before the deadline to add players.
- What types of rules govern
league play?
All of our softball leagues
use the basic ASA (Amateur Softball Association) rules and our own
League Rule Guides. The League Rule Guides contain many "house"
rules which are specific to the needs of our recreation leagues.
Each league (Men's Weeknight Slo-Pitch, Women's 3-Pitch, etc.) may
have different League Rule Guides, however, the basic softball
rules apply to all leagues. All team managers receive an ASA rule
book and a League Rule Guide at the Manager's Meetings.
